ACTS of LOVE & KINDNESS: Allison Goodman

Valentine's Day will be filled with extra love and kindness thanks to a day of giving from energi PR's Montreal and Toronto teams. Allison Goodman, from energi PR's healthcare practice, shares her plans for her day of ACTS of LOVE & KINDNESS.

Mosoq Ayllu is a non-profit organization located in Huancayo, Peru (a small city in the highlands of Peru).  It offers volunteers the opportunity to be exposed to Peruvian culture, the Spanish language, and work with children with disabilities, street children, work in the jungle, at orphanages, and in medical centres.

Its mission is to help people in economically distressed communities improve their living conditions. Mosoq Ayllu aims to improve the quality of education in deprived areas of Peru, implement the international rights related to child development and provide volunteers the opportunity to serve communities in a developing country while experiencing the Peruvian culture and improving their Spanish language skills.

Mosoq Ayllu operates with a small staff, so international volunteers are always welcome (www.volunteering-in-peru.com). They’re so welcome, in fact, that Juan Jose, the organization’s director, opens his family home and rents out rooms to volunteers.

Two years ago, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Mosoq Ayllu. It was a truly incredible experience. Mornings were spent working at a school for children with disabilities and afternoons were spent working with the street kids program. These children didn’t have iPads or video games, no television or, in some instances, running water, but I have never seen such happiness. Much of our time was spent playing, talking and drawing pictures for them to colour in. What I taught them doesn’t even come close to what they taught me, which is why I will spend my time on February 14th working with Juan Jose to attract more volunteers.

My Act of Love and Kindness: Donating my day to work with Juan Jose to edit web site content. Also, as skepticism grows surrounding volunteering in foreign countries, I will work with Juan Jose to develop a question and answer document to share with potential volunteers and house on the website to address any concerns and ensure transparency.
