Carol Levine, CEO and Co-Founder of energi PR, shares her thoughts on the virtual workplace.\u00a0<\/em><\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n

In a recent Ad\u00a0Week article, Dave Lafond, co-founder\u00a0and CEO of No Fixed Address talked about the\u00a0company\u2019s\u00a0business model\u00a0stating,\u00a0\u201cWe report to client problems, not offices. We don\u2019t care about opening up a city or an office, per se.\u201d He also talked about the notion of \u201cliberation\u201d \u2013 about creating a dynamic where creativity and autonomy have\u00a0free reign.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I thought about this\u00a0in terms of my own experience as an agency\u00a0co-founder and owner. In the day,\u00a0my business partner and I saw ourselves as\u00a0mavericks,\u00a0expanding west of our hometown of Montreal and\u00a0opening\u00a0an\u00a0office in Toronto\u00a0without\u00a0the\u00a0safety net\u00a0of a parent company.\u00a0In those days\u00a0especially, the price of admission to\u00a0winning\u00a0national and multi-national business were bricks and mortar and an address in the right part of town.\u00a0We\u00a0made the decision to expand\u00a0to Toronto\u00a0after feedback from a prospective client\u00a0that we needed a local presence.\u00a0That meant paying rent\u00a0and\u00a0hiring a local team.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Over the years we\u00a0debated the importance\u00a0attributed\u00a0to\u00a0physical\u00a0offices,\u00a0the\u00a0numbers\u00a0of employees\u00a0and even\u00a0revenue\u00a0thresholds\u00a0in\u00a0assessing\u00a0an agency\u2019s reputation and street credentials.\u00a0These elements\u00a0fed\u00a0into\u00a0a\u00a0commonly held belief\u00a0that bigger\u00a0was\u00a0better.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Today, such\u00a0metrics\u00a0are\u00a0meaningless to me\u00a0as we\u00a0remain\u00a0stuck in\u00a0the\u00a0pandemic,\u00a0and\u00a0where\u00a0a prestigious address doesn\u2019t account for much, except\u00a0for\u00a0its\u00a0squeeze\u00a0on\u00a0the\u00a0bottom line.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The past 18 months\u00a0have\u00a0been an awakening\u00a0in terms of what\u00a0makes a business\u00a0successful.\u00a0I was curious about how it would feel\u00a0to declutter what we do. Will the corporate\u00a0Marie Kondo\u00a0please step forward?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Who uses letterhead and envelopes anymore? The clunky copier machine and\u00a0shelves of office supplies have laid dormant\u00a0for more than a year\u00a0and a half. Who needs\u00a0all\u00a0that stuff?\u00a0I \u201csee\u201d clients more often on Zoom\u00a0than\u00a0I\u00a0could have\u00a0ever in person, though\u00a0this is by no means an endorsement of the platform\u00a0or\u00a0my desire\u00a0to avoid in-person meetings when it\u00a0becomes\u00a0safe. But\u00a0in hindsight, did I really need to\u00a0book a\u00a0last-minute\u00a0flight\u00a0for one casual lunch meeting?\u00a0Does that make our business better or appear more engaged?<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

On the subject of human resources,\u00a0the world is\u00a0now\u00a0our oyster. Who cares\u00a0if\u00a0incredible talent\u00a0lives\u00a0halfway\u00a0across the country? We\u00a0can make\u00a0it\u00a0work!\u00a0Flexibility\u00a0and\u00a0accommodation\u00a0are\u00a0the new normal.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Commuting\u00a0a few hours from a distant\u00a0part of\u00a0the city, once a barrier for those wanting to work for a\u00a0great\u00a0downtown\u00a0communications\u00a0agency is\u00a0no longer\u00a0a deal breaker.\u00a0Work from home has not only become\u00a0acceptable but\u00a0has proven\u00a0effective.\u00a0As owners and managers, we can build incredibly smart,\u00a0expansive,\u00a0and specialized teams\u00a0in ways that meet the needs of\u00a0our\u00a0employees, our clients,\u00a0and ourselves.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Some people\u00a0find\u00a0relaxation in a game\u00a0of golf,\u00a0meditation or on a beach.\u00a0I on the other hand strangely seem to decompress best while purging and organizing\u00a0kitchen\u00a0cupboards, bedroom\u00a0closets, even an entire storage locker.\u00a0Just as I find freedom in decluttering on the home front, decluttering business, particularly\u00a0after what I\u2019ve observed during the COVID pandemic,\u00a0has created the potential for psychological and tactical liberation, leaving more space for\u00a0creativity and\u00a0<\/span>energi<\/span><\/b>.\u00a0A welcome relief in all the right ways.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
