Hiring interns is commonplace for communications agencies like energi PR. Typically we are approached by eager students from several schools offering certificate programs in public relations, who are ready to roll up their sleeves and get an authentic taste of agency life. For many, this often leads to their first job. Last year we were excited to receive several applications from students enrolled in the Master of Professional Communications (MPC) at Ryerson University. Earlier this month, we were glad to welcome Anthony Israelstam who shares more about the MPC program below as well as what he hopes to gain from his internship with energi PR.

Anthony Israelstam is a Master in Professional Communications student at Ryerson University currently completing his internship at energi PR.

I chose Ryerson University’s Master of Professional Communication program because it offers students and aspiring professionals like myself practical exposure to the communications and public relations sectors. In fact, Ryerson’s MPC program makes it compulsory for students to seek out an internship with a PR or communications organization.

Upon review of several PR agencies, I decided to reach out to energi PR, a seasoned agency that specializes in health and environmental sciences. Throughout the duration of my internship, I intend to observe, learn and participate in the tasks that are critical to the success of the agency. More specifically, I hope to be involved in pitching to clients, developing communication plans, conducting media monitoring, and undertaking critical research activities. Overall, I am especially excited about learning about the fields of health and environmental science, particularly from a public relations perspective.

Ultimately, it was MPC’s curriculum and assortment of experienced professors that pushed me to apply to the program. The assignments and projects offered to students bridge the gap between education and a future career. Additionally, the MPC program emphasizes the importance of understanding the sociological determinants that exist to motivate personal and collective action. Thus, several courses offer a critical examination of the values and beliefs that inform the actions of various stakeholders, whether they be consumers, politicians, or medical professionals.
